May is National Hamburger Month. Recently, Technomic Inc. released some eye-opening statistics validating the popularity of hamburgers in America. By the numbers:

  • One out of every four dollars in the food service channel are spent on handheld items (e.g., sandwiches, burgers, etc.)
    • 44% of total sandwich sales are burgers!

  • Total Sandwich sales are $205.36 billion
    • Burger Sales are $90.57 billion!
  • 57% of burger sales were in QSRs
  • 3.2% burger category growth between 2013 and 2016; projected growth
  • 3.4% between 2017 and 2019. Relevant Statistic: Technomic Inc. forecasted total industry growth at 1.7%.

  • Within foodservice: consumption is highest in Travel & Leisure (4.7%)
