In August, a team of three Custom Culinary, Inc. chefs joined 250 chefs from 44 countries in a World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS) global initiative to help stop hunger. The Bidvest World Chefs Tour Against Hunger gave culinary professionals the opportunity to use their expertise in an international role of teacher to help fight this global crisis.

The event raised a total of 8 million Rand (R8 million) for local anti-hunger charities, which will serve a meal to 450 kids every day for the next 5 years!

This milestone event kicked off with chefs, donned in coats and toques, walking through the streets of Johannesburg, South Africa. From there, the chefs split up among seven South African communities to feed kids and teach local chefs about cooking.

Chefs Scott Gilbert, CEC, AAC, HGT and Mike Minor, CEC, AAC, HGT from the United States and Chef Barandiharan Pasha of India represented Custom Culinary, Inc. in Cape Town where they raised funds at various culinary events over their 10 day stay.

The brainchild of this event, the first of which was in 1993, is WACS honorary life president Dr. Bill Gallagher. For his efforts, Dr. Gallagher received a letter from President Barack Obama who acknowledged the chef’s humanitarian work and wished him success at the event in Africa. The Bidvest World Chefs Tour Against Hunger was co-sponsored by the South African Chefs Association.
